Comparison
Thonest vs ChartMogul
ChartMogul is one of the best analytics products in the category and Thonest does not compete with it. The overlap is narrow and worth being precise about: ChartMogul's dashboards are for the people inside your company, and publishing anything from them is something you build yourself against its API. Thonest is the published page.
What ChartMogul is
ChartMogul is a subscription analytics platform used by thousands of software companies. It connects to Stripe and other billing systems and turns them into accurate revenue metrics — MRR, churn, cohorts, expansion — on dashboards for you and your team.
| ChartMogul | Thonest | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A subscription analytics platform | A verified revenue timeline built to be shown to other people |
| Who the dashboards are for | You and your team. Personal or shared, inside the account | Your customer, investor or candidate, who has thirty seconds and no context |
| Publishing it | Through the API — Ghost, for instance, built its own public page that way | Publish, or paste one line of code. Nothing to build |
| Depth of metrics | Deep. Churn, LTV, cohorts, expansion, segmentation, forecasting | Revenue and customers, and the decisions behind them. Nothing else |
| Explains why the numbers moved | It is built to help you work that out | It shows the reader what you did and what followed |
| Price | A paid analytics subscription | Free. $79/month for more than one business |
When ChartMogul is the better choice
- You need to understand your own business. Cohorts, churn, expansion revenue, forecasting — ChartMogul is excellent at this and Thonest does none of it.
- You have several billing systems. It is built for exactly that, and we read one payment processor per company.
- You have engineering time and want a public page built precisely your way against their API.
When Thonest is the better choice
- You want the page, not the pipeline. Building a public dashboard on someone's API is a project; this is a link and one line of code.
- The reader is not an analyst. A prospect wants to know you are real and growing, and a metrics suite is the wrong shape for that question.
- You want the decisions attached to the numbers. Analytics tells you revenue tripled; it does not tell your reader that you repriced in March and what the ninety days after looked like.
- You are not in the market for analytics and would rather not buy a platform to publish one figure.
The short version
These barely overlap. If you need to know what is happening inside your business, buy ChartMogul. If you need someone outside it to believe what is happening, that is a different artifact, and building it on top of an analytics API is a lot of work to arrive where Thonest starts.
