The key you need

In Dodo Payments, open Developer → API Keys and add a new key. Leave Enable write access switched off, then create it and copy it.

With write access off the key is read-only: it can read your subscriptions and cannot create, change or refund anything. Test and live keys are issued separately and each only works in its own environment; Thonest works out which one you pasted and treats a test key as test mode.

Why you pick Dodo before pasting

Most processors put a recognisable prefix on their keys — sk_, pdl_, polar_oat_ — so a pasted key identifies itself. A Dodo Payments key has no prefix at all.

So on the connect screen you pick Dodo Payments first, and Thonest reads the key as a Dodo key only because you chose it. It never guesses: an unmarked key that could belong to anyone is not sent to a processor on a hunch.

What gets counted

Recurring subscription revenue before tax, since Dodo handles tax as merchant of record. Active and past-due subscriptions count, and plans billed daily, weekly, monthly or yearly are all brought to the same monthly basis.

It is the same rule every company on Thonest is measured by, so a Dodo seller and a Stripe seller can be compared honestly.
